Monumental Struggle
A copper clad teenager on a pedestal, carrying a rebel battle flag silently greeted everyone entering the Talbot County Courthouse every year since 1916. His vigil lasted until a 7 year long political struggle ended on March 14, 2022, when he was moved to a lonely Civil War battlefield in Virginia. Our story will illuminate almost 400 years of Eastern Shore history that surround the monumental struggles of slavery, Civil War and Jim Crow that created this monument and then led to it’s downfall in the wake of Racial Justice protests after the murder of George Floyd.
