In 1989, David N. Dinkins made history when he was elected the 106th mayor of New York City and became the city’s first and only African-American mayor. This film chronicles his historic campaign in which he ran against three-time incumbent mayor Ed Koch in the primary and Republican candidate Rudy Giuliani in the general election. It views this historic election and mayoralty through the eyes of political players, key staff members, journalists and cultural figures. From accomplishments, challenges and flashpoints, the film is a meditation on the time; it reflects the legacy of leadership, strife and race relations in this great urban metropolis.
