In 2014, Flint, Michigan residents sounded alarm bells about problems with their drinking water, but it took 17 months for their voices to be heard. In late 2015, their fears were confirmed: they had been exposed to high levels of lead as the government was assuring them that all drinking water safety standards were being met. Fourteen years earlier, taps in Washington D.C. began dispensing even higher levels of lead. The contamination was under wraps for two and a half years, resulting in large-scale and unprecedented public health harm. Lead-in-water problems in the US are widespread, but they are systematically underestimated, misrepresented, and downplayed. Following the journey of the silenced fighting to be heard, Unsafe At Any Level uncovers a story of exploitation, negligence and disempowerment by our leaders, authorities, storytellers and decision-makers.
