Trademark, Copyright and AI for Documentary Filmmakers
Recognizing the longstanding need for an integrated intellectual property (“IP”) approach to documentary filmmaking, this introductory course is essential to explore innovative strategies for managing and executing the numerous activities related to rights in this field.
Students will explore the definitions, requirements, and practical applications of trademarks, as well as common challenges—even for well-established organizations. They will gain an understanding of copyrights, particularly how they apply to documentary filmmaking. Additionally, the course will examine the evolving impact of Artificial Intelligence on intellectual property in filmmaking, addressing the uncertainties it introduces. A key focus will be the implications of AI in the recent SAG-AFTRA agreements, with an initial discussion on how these developments may affect independent documentary filmmakers.
